Paris Couture Week and France's Fashion Bill
As promised, I’m bringing you an update on haute couture week! The Parisian runways were full of glittering, glowing, and elaborate designs that I can’t wait to discuss. Plus, I have a bit more news about fashion in France: the senate just passed a bill regulating fast fashion, but it may not be what it seems…
Today’s mood board:
Haute Couture in Paris
This year’s Paris haute couture week left a strong impression. From the bioluminescent Iris van Herpen dress I mentioned last week to the sculptural roses from Rahul Mishra, the runways were unforgettable. I especially appreciated all the metallic looks across couture week — their shine is already eye-catching, but the designs from luxury houses like Schiaparelli and Ashi were truly creative. You can watch Ashi’s full runway show to see the sculptural details up close, all against a decadent Parisian backdrop. My favorite show has to be Schiaparelli, though! Each look is unique and exquisite, nodding to the brand’s design history while evoking surreal awe.

Plus, while Paris is always great for people watching, couture week takes the street style to another level. Check out some of Elle magazine’s favorite looks and take inspiration for your own outfits with Marie Claire’s shoppable run-through!

Is France breaking up with fast fashion?
In an episode of the Glossy podcast last month, I heard that the French senate has approved a bill fighting against ultra-fast fashion companies. While the headlines are promising, there’s some nuance I think is worth discussing. First, the blanket statements about “fast fashion” are a bit misleading, as the senate has clarified that certain European brands (including Zara and H&M) will not be affected. Those companies will apparently still be required to comply with environmental transparency requirements. Otherwise, the bill’s language refers to “ultra” fast fashion, which is a term generally used for retailers such as Shein and Temu. France’s approach involves hefty taxes on each item sold, plus a ban on advertisement and promotional influencer content for these brands. Bye, bye, Shein hauls!
Keep in mind: while the bill has been approved by the French senate, it still needs to pass through months of further refinement before becoming law. If it remains fairly intact, however, I’m optimistic about its impact! Hopefully France is just the first among many countries to take legislative action to curb fast fashion’s growing environmental footprint.
Extra, extra!
Justin Bieber’s new clothing brand Skylrk finally launched last week after a long wait. Bieber’s been teasing his collection, designed by Finn Rush-Taylor, since 2023; the line of footwear, clothing, and accessories sold out in days. If you want to get the signature JB look, keep an eye out for restocks!

Also, in the latest news about Shein, France just fined the company 40 million euro for misleading customers about price deals and sustainability claims. I’m glad they’re trying to hold (at least some) brands accountable!
