Happy Monday!
While organizing my closet the other day, I was listening to an episode of the Sustain This podcast about AI styling tools. The hosts shared their experiences using wardrobe apps of different types - I’ve tried a couple of these too and thought it would be fun to explore the latest tech! Many of these styling apps market themselves as a real-life iteration of Cher Horowitz’ digital wardrobe in the movie Clueless, so naturally I’ve been seeking some 90s style inspiration.
Today’s mood board:
AI Stylists
In the last few years, several wardrobe organization apps have promised a solution to the “full closet with nothing to wear” problem. Their system diverges from past trends around minimalism and capsule wardrobes, instead offering a tool to organize what you own. I’ve been curious how these apps can help us make use of our wardrobes, and whether they could help cut through the confusion and spark creativity. AI features especially could help suggest tailored outfit combinations and, much like Cher’s digital wardrobe, warn us when something is a mismatch.
In the podcast episode I referenced above, the hosts discussed whether AI outfit creation tools could actually replace human stylists. As some are stylists themselves, they acknowledged their bias while arguing that the personal touch is irreplaceable. I tend to agree; there’s nuance and subjectivity in styling that might be lost on even sophisticated AI. For now.
Personally, I like trying on a load of possible outfits every now and then, styling forgotten pieces or pairing items that I’ve never worn together. Experimenting is a great creative exercise, but for anyone feeling in a rut, why not try an app? One writer for the Guardian found AI tools provided surprisingly on-brand outfits that “reignited” her own sense of style.
A while ago I downloaded one of these apps, Whering, and generally liked the interface. The thing is, I found it so tedious to photograph and catalogue all my clothing that I gave up and deleted the app! Now that Whering has introduced its AI component, I wonder if I should give that a go. Have any of you tried a styling app before? Feel free to comment your stories or thoughts!
