Venice Film Festival & Rewearing Fashion
Last week, the Venice Film Festival kicked off its 81st iteration. I’ve been admiring all the red carpet looks and building up my watch list based on the screening news. Speaking of films, the Beetlejuice sequel is out in theaters this weekend - a perfect kick-off to the upcoming spooky season if you ask me. Even though the weather still screams summer (my LA friends are in for a heat wave this week), I love the autumn season for its transitional fashion and moodier aesthetics approaching Halloween.
Today’s Mood:
The glitzy looks from the Venice Film Festival inspired visions of old world charm, romantic evening canal rides, and a touch of Hollywood sparkle. I think spooky and gothic-inspired details play so well with classic glamor; they share a richness and an enveloping quality that I love. Velvet, lace, and darker hues can add depth to any outfit, even when used sparingly… If you’re looking to play with sensual details without going overboard (or overheating), try layered sheer fabrics, a peek of lace, or even airy but dark-colored linen pieces.
Venice Film Festival Fashion
Hosted by La Biennale di Venezia, the Venice Film Festival is the oldest in the world. All the screenings and events take place on the island of Lido, which is an artistic hub of the city. In addition to showcasing new international films, the festival is devoted to celebrating cinema’s history through screening classic and restored films. Plus, the Venice Biennale has a whole page about environmental initiatives and standards for each of its annual events.
From the red carpet to the storied cobblestones, this year’s Venice Film Festival has been full of inspiring style.
Check out Vogue’s roundup of the best celebrity street style looks from the festival so far.
You can also watch this recap video of the opening ceremony red carpet: the looks include lots of classic colors and timeless Hollywood glamor, but with playful twists of tailoring and styling. I’m into all the glimmering jewelry and gorgeous fabric textures!
Taylor Russell has been stepping out in some captivating looks, especially this archival Chanel gown.
Meanwhile, Cate Blanchett is stunning as always in a series of looks featuring restyled pieces that nod to her previous red carpets.

This idea of rewearing fashion isn’t new, but it makes a particular statement when done intentionally on such a large scale. Cate Blanchett has proven how beautiful it is to rewear occasion pieces: her stylist, Elizabeth Stewart, shares each exquisite look on Instagram and highlights which elements are being repeated from past events. This is fantastic because it helps draw attention to how reworn and restyled pieces can exude glamor - even for celebrities on the red carpet - so why not take inspiration when dressing yourself for special events? Cate Blanchett herself said in an interview last year that rewearing looks should be normalized; she’s showing how fashionable it is to take pride in valuing your most loved wardrobe pieces by styling them time and time again. Bravo, Cate!
More to love:
I’m a huge fan of Winona Ryder - from her Beetlejuice and Heathers days to Stranger Things and beyond, her gothic-infused style has been such an inspiration through the years.
If you’re curious to learn more about celebrity stylist Elizabeth Stewart, start with this fun interview or read about her recent collab with Vestiaire Collective!

Besides repeating looks, another great way to dress for special occasions is using clothing rental services. Some of these suggestions from Vogue have trial periods for their subscription plans - either way, they allow you to try out elevated and glamorous looks without committing to purchases.
The thriller movie The Order starring Jude Law is one I’m particularly excited to see - and it received a 10-minute ovation!
Finally, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice duo Winona Ryder and Jenna Ortega did a fun interview together for Elle - I love their subtly-themed outfits in the video!
That’s all for now! Chat to you soon,
